Exfoliation

What is exfoliation?
It is any technique that removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, revealing newer, smoother skin as well as stimulating cell renewal.
The skin cell’s can dry and dull the skin’s surface, cause clogging, and congestion.
An exfoliation regimen can reduce the time dulling skin cells sit at the surface our skin, and give the skin a healthier, more vibrant complexion.

Who needs exfoliation?
Everyone exfoliates naturally; an exfoliation regimen automatically causes skin renewal because new cells are stimulated to push towards the surface to replace the newly removed dead cells, which is very vital as we age.
Teenagers can regenerate their external layer of skin every 14 days.
As we get older, this process slows down, as the “glue” that holds our cells together becomes denser. The natural sloughing off of older cells becomes more difficult, and causing a build up that results in dull, thick skin with less tone.
Cell renewal can take up to 35 days in midlife and up to 90 days in maturity.

After-care treatment:
Depending on the strength of your treatment, the skin may feel a little tight and sensitized for a little while when you leave the studio. This is perfectly normal, and should dissipate quickly.
Most important after any form of exfoliation is to protect your super-vulnerable skin against the sun, cleanse with a super-gentle cleanser, and follow up with a moisturizer to prevent dehydration.

Stronger is not always better:
Many people get a little exfoliation-crazy, if a little is good then a lot has to be great. NOT TRUE. While every skin condition is different, and reacts to exfoliation differently, you should cut back your exfoliation regimen if your skin feels chapped, irritated or is unusually red for a prolonged period of time. At this point, you are not removing dead skin cells / debris – you’re scrubbing away the protective barrier of the epidermis, which can result in permanent sensitization, premature aging and a host of other concerns.
